After 36 hours of travel, we arrived in Indonesia! We are recovering from major jet lag, but are off and running making connections, setting up a cell phone, connecting to wifi, and arranging transportation.
Speaking of transportation, we weighed out the options and have decided on renting 2 mopeds for our stay. The island is way too spread out to walk (with NO sidewalks). The cost of taxis daily would be a small fortune (approximately $600 for our stay here). So the best option is mopeds. For $5 a day we can get around fairly easily. Sounds good, right? In theory…absolutely. In reality…it is almost a death wish.
Don grew up riding motorcycles around South America since he was 13. He had a motorcycle all through college in Chicago (and attracted a cute girl from soccer to ride along with him for life!). He has experience and confidence with Eva riding in front and Lille on the back.
I have broken my arm while roller skating…twice. Broke a couple ribs on rollerblades. I am not the most steady on 2 wheels. Add that to a lot of traffic, VERY narrow roads, driving on the opposite side of the road and having a kid bigger than me on the back. Recipe for disaster.
Speaking of disaster, yesterday Isaiah and I may or may not have had a shaky start on our moped and knocked over a few other mopeds parked nearby and ended up in the sewage ditch that runs alongside the road. Isaiah was smart to jump off the back as we propelled into the ditch. We both are fine with only a few scratches.
So wondering how you can pray? Protection for us as we move around the island.
We are off to visit a cool ministry that works in impoverished communities. They have invited us for lunch and to get a glimpse of what they are doing in Bali. They are about 40 minutes away so today we take a taxi. (Mom, you can rest easier today!).
